Miami Arts Charter School admission and enrollment policies and procedures.

Details for enrollment procedures including criteria used and the number and type of students included in the process:

The school is open to students in grades 6-12 who qualify to attend a traditional public school. The school does not discriminate based on race, religion, or national origin in the admission of students. The school will seek students with an interest in the areas of art, music, dance, creative writing/acting.

The process for admission will begin with a student completing a standard application requesting admission to the school. The application is available online on the school’s website and may be submitted via electronic mail. Once the application is received, the student will be given an appointment to visit the school and audition or interview for placement at ability levels before teachers and staff in the particular arts area(s) sought. Each student may apply for two different areas but must ultimately choose one.  This will allow us to place students by levels.

Specific criteria/requirements will be distributed in advance during all presentations and will also be posted on the school’s website. Students will be evaluated by teachers and staff and all students will be placed in groups based on their ability levels. Points to consider for placing students at ability levels may include the following:

  • Artistic Level and Proficiency Achieved
  • Artistic and Performance Potential
  • Willingness to Commit to High Performance Standards
  • Placement Recommendation from Previous Arts Teacher

Additionally, staff may consider special circumstances such as a particular need for a talent or skill a student may poses in order to complement the school’s mission of establishing performing groups that are balanced based on accepted standards common in the arts. For example, a student may be placed in a different level because he/she plays a particular instrument necessary to complete a particular music ensemble (band, jazz band, etc.) or another student may have particular skills and talents beneficial to the school’s dance ensemble.

It is the school’s policy to be as inclusive as possible of all students who apply in order to achieve the widest diversity of students practical. If demand exceeds capacity, the school will create a waiting list in order to notify students and parents of new openings and registration availability.
