Art/Photography Requirements, High School PDF Print E-mail

Miami Arts Charter School
Grades 9-11, High School

Entry into the Visual Art Program is based upon assessment of the student's talent, and overall dedication to the arts. Miami Arts Charter seeks enthusiastic, creative young artists who are well rounded and maintain a good standing in their academic classes. A positive attitude and eagerness to learn are important factors in the success of a Visual Art student.

Students may audition for the Visual Art program or the combined Visual Art/Photography program.

AUDITION PROCESS:

After completing an online application, students will be notified of their designated audition date and time via email.  Students should plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to their scheduled audition time, carrying their sketchbook and portfolio only.  Staff at Miami Arts Charter will guide applicants to the audition room.  All necessary drawing materials will be provided.

Whether choosing to major in Visual Art only or the combined Visual Art/Photography program, all students are required to take the general Visual Art Audition. This process consists of a Portfolio Review and a Drawing Assessment and takes approximately 1 hour.  The portfolio requirements are listed below and should be carefully adhered to.  The "Drawing Assessment" consists of (2) 30 minute drawing exercises; 1. Contour Line Drawing and 2. Charcoal Still-Life.  Students' portfolios will be reviewed while the drawing assessment is in progress.  There is no interview required for the Visual Art Audition.

Visual Art/Photography applicants will stay for an additional private interview with the Photography Instructor.  They should allow 1 more hour for this process due to wait time.

VISUAL ART Portfolio Requirements

1. SKETCHBOOK: A sketchbook is an essential part of the portfolio because it documents the students' interests, personality and commitment to expressing themselves visually. Sketchbooks can have anything and everything! Encourage your child to draw, paint, write, cut and paste images, and fill their book cover to cover with interesting material.

2. PORTFOLIO:

1. OBSERVATIONAL DRAWING / PAINTING: Choose the 10 best samples of observational works of art. Observational works of art can be drawings, paintings or 2D mixed media works of art that show the students' drawing skill and ability to create the illusion of depth and volume with shading and light.  Please include observational works in grayscale and full color. Please do not include more than 10 samples. These can include, but are not limited to:

- Self Portrait

- Figure Drawing / Painting

- Still Life

- Landscape

2.  OTHER CREATIVE WORKS OF ART: Choose up to 5 non-observational works of art that highlight the student's unique, creative voice and personality. These works can be in ANY media: drawing, painting, digital art, sculpture, etc.

*Portfolio Presentation:  All works should be carried in a closed portfolio.  Portfolios can be purchased at Art Supply stores or Office Depot.  It is not necessary to purchase expensive portfolios.  Careful attention to the presentation and handling of artwork is highly encouraged.  No glass frames.
