Creative Writing Overview PDF Print E-mail

The Miami Arts Creative Writing Program provides the tools, instruction and experience that young writers need to fully explore their potential as artists and scholars. Our school is strongly committed to providing an environment in which extensive writing, along with constructive peer and faculty critiquing in both individual and workshop settings, take place regularly.

Students in the Creative Writing Program are challenged by college-preparatory academics. It is our goal to graduate well-rounded students who are well prepared for the rigors of study at top colleges and universities, no matter what career path they ultimately choose.

A new Creative Writing student must take Beginning Creative Writing in his/her first year. Beginning Creative Writing teaches the basics of three genres—poetry, short fiction and creative non-fiction—with an additional emphasis on playwriting. Students are also introduced to the vocabulary, guidelines of revision, rules of formatting and general standards of excellence to which they will be held.

After the first year, majors must take Advanced Creative Writing, which encourages students to write longer as well as sequential pieces of work. In their senior year, majors are offered (not required) the opportunity to write a thesis, or book-length, work. Majors are also required to attend two external readings per semester, and are expected to participate fully in all program activities, including individual tutorials, field trips, guest writers' workshops and readings, submission and publication opportunities, and their own Holiday and Spring Showcases (readings/performances).

Students who choose to major in Creative Writing should take into account, when planning their class schedules, that time must be reserved for writing, and therefore care should be taken to avoid an overload of homework.

Students who choose Creative Writing are highly encouraged to expand their course of study by also electing to take classes in the Theatre Department.
