Miami Arts Charter School


(For all students wishing to audition for placement into the advanced high school instrumental jazz music program)

GENERAL PROCEDURES

  • Students should arrive early to warm-up.
  • The prepared selections should not be more than 5 minutes total.
  • The school will provide a drum set for the jazz audition.
  • All students must provide their own instruments for the audition.
  • Any necessary amplifiers for guitarists are to be provided by the student. The school will not provide an amplifier.
  • A piano will be provided.
  • Parents and observers may not enter the audition room during the audition.
  • Placement audition appointments and reply letters will be sent via eMail. Be sure to enter the correct eMail address when applying online.
  • Direct any questions to the music department via eMail.

 All students (except drummers) auditioning for the instrumental music jazz program will complete the following:
  • Complete the regular classical audition.
  • Perform two additional selections from the Jamey Aebersold Jazz series of books. One selection must come from the Blues in All Keys, Vol 42 Book. The second may be any jazz standard or ballad from any of the other books. Each book comes with an accompaniment CD. An audio system will be provided for the audition.
  • All jazz selections must be memorized.
  • Improvisation is optional. If not improvising, student should play the main melody one time and stop.
  • If Improvising, student should play the main melody, one solo chorus, the main melody again and stop.
  • Guitar players should be able to "comp" on basic chords and forms of the ii-V7-I chord progression in a medium swing feel (Cmin7-F7-BbMaj7,  Gmin7-C7-FMaj7, and Amin7-D7-GMaj7).
  • Bass players should be able to play a walking bass line on basic chords and forms of the ii-V7-I chord progression in a medium swing feel (Cmin7-F7-BbMaj7,  Gmin7-C7-FMaj7, and Amin7-D7-GMaj7).

DRUMMERS

  • Must complete the regular concert percussion audition
  • Perform three 24-bar "grooves": Swing, Rock, Latin and Bossa Nova. Each groove should consist of 12 measures of time, 12 measures of solo and stop.
  • Latin percussionists may audition on congas as an additional piece.
