VOCAL REQUIREMENTS

Students will be required to sing two (2) selections from memory:
  • The first selection must be a classical, folk or traditional piece.
  • The second selection can be any song from the classical, jazz, or musical theatre repertoire.
  • Students will be asked to display pitch recognition and sight-singing skills.
  • A brief and informal music theory survey will be conducted to determine theoretical knowledge.
The following are suggestions of publications containing pieces from which repertoire could be selected for the classical portion:
  • 24 Italian Songs & Arias, Published by G. Schirmer
  • 26 Italian Songs, Published by Alfred
  • The Young Singer, Published Carl Fischer

Students may provide their own accompanist or bring a high quality recorded accompaniment CD. There should be NO VOCALS on this recording.

For the jazz audition, students may elect to perform a jazz standard, by memory, from any of the Jamey Aebersold books. Each book comes with an accompaniment CD. Improvisation is optional. If not improvising, students should sing one chorus of the main melody and stop.
