Miami Arts Charter School

(For all students wishing to audition for placement into the middle school beginning vocal music program)

PLEASE NOTE: Middle school programs typically select students for the advanced music program who have transitioned from the beginning and intermediate programs within the school throughout the previous year or two. As a new school, Miami Arts Charter Middle will accept both beginning and advanced students in order to fill advanced ensembles. However, after two years it is anticipated that available advanced seats will become more limited as such positions will be filled with existing students.

Because students entering the beginning music program in middle school will most likely not have any previous experience, a general musical aptitude test is administered to determine the best course of study for the student. Students will be considered for and may choose from entering into beginning band, chorus or orchestra. Piano and guitar is not offered as a class and is only available at the advanced level in middle school.

GENERAL PROCEDURES

  • Students should arrive early to the interview.
  • The interview should not take longer than 20 minutes total.
  • Direct any questions to the music department. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

AUDITION AND INTERVIEW CRITERIA
Students applying for beginning level vocal music will undergo the following process to determine selection:
  1. A musical evaluation survey from the student's previous classroom teacher will be requested (completed online).
  2. Peform a section of a song.  The selection may be a folk song, classical piece, patriotic song or a simple hymn.
  3. A brief musical aptitude test will be conducted that will assess the student's level of rhythmic and tonal development.
  4. A simple music notation and theory test will be administered to determine level of music theory knowledge (if any).
  5. A discussion with the student and the parent will take place in order to determine placement based on assessment by our staff and the student's interest.
