Music Program Overview PDF Print E-mail

The Miami Arts Charter School music program offers a comprehensive curriculum based on the national standards of the Music Educators National Conference. The department is divided into several areas that consist of instrumental music (band, orchestra, piano and guitar), vocal music and music theory. Students may also choose to pursue conducting skills within our leadership program.

All music ensembles perform in all events of the state-sanctioned components of the Florida School Music Association, the Florida Bandmasters Association, the Florida Orchestra Association, Florida Vocal Association and the American Choral Directors Association. Students participate in solo and ensemble music performance assessments, district and state music performance assessments and All-State Honors ensembles auditions.

It is the philosophy of the music program that students learn performance skills through a combination of participation in ensembles and soloing opportunities. The music curriculum is extensive and we place a great emphasis on performance skills that are essential to the development of any young musician. Thus, selection of quality repertoire is of major importance in all that students are asked to do in the music program. Students are also expected to master basic music skills including producing a characteristic tone on their instrument or voice, sight-reading, rhythmic skills and tonal skills and general knowledge of the various genres from the major arts periods and world music.

American Jazz music is also highly emphasized and students are encouraged to participate in the jazz studies program through participation in the Jazz Band, Jazz Vocal Ensemble and in numerous Jazz small groups. Learning to improvise is a major goal of the jazz program as well as developing students' sensibilities in Jazz interpretation (swing feel, melodic interpretation, the blues, chord changes, melodies and solo construction). The jazz studies program covers areas such as learning to play jazz standards (traditional jazz compositions).

In cooperation with the University of Miami Frost School of Music, underclass students participate in advanced music studies through private and small group sessions delivered on our school's campus. Senior music students attend their private lessons on the University campus with the music school's principal professors in order to provide advanced level experiences for students wishing to pursue a music career beyond high school.

The school's music courses are taught by a highly-qualified staff of professionals and educators. The school's founders are also the high school directors for the instrumental and vocal music programs.
