Visual arts audition requirements

Students auditioning into the Miami Arts Charter School Visual Arts Department must meet the following requirements in order to be considered for entry. Students must bring their portfolios and sketchbooks to the audition. This applies for all grade levels.

All necessary drawing materials will be provided. The audition process takes approximately 60-90 minutes.

The audition process consists of two parts:

1. Portfolio & Sketchbook Review

2. Drawing Test (Still Life in Pencil)

PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS:

The portfolio requirements are listed below and should be adhered to carefully. The portfolios are reviewed by MAC faculty while the drawing assessment is in progress.

Bring in a portfolio of your best artwork. Please choose a portfolio that can be easily opened and closed. There are no specific requirements for the type of portfolio. They can be made of cardboard, durable paper or other materials. Do not include any heavy frames or glass. Please do not include any 3D works of art. Sculptural work should be photographed and printed to be included in the portfolio. Digital artwork must be printed and included in the portfolio - works on electronic devices will not be assessed.

Please include the following in your portfolio to the best of your ability:

Middle School Candidates:

6 - 10 Artworks of your choice.
We encourage you to showcase a range of subject matter and demonstrate versatility by including works created with different materials, such as pencil, charcoal, colored pencil, or pastels.  We recommend including works based on real-life observation and avoiding recreations of cartoon or animated characters.

High School Candidates:

1. One Self-Portrait in Pencil
2. One Interior Space in Pencil
3. One Landscape Drawing in Color (any medium)
4. 3 - 7 additional works of your choice.

SKETCHBOOK:

A sketchbook is an essential part of the portfolio because it documents the students' interests, personality and commitment to expressing themselves visually. Sketchbooks can have anything and everything! Students are encouraged to draw, paint, write, cut and paste images, and fill their book cover to cover with interesting material.
